I'm continuing to 'ignore' the project and enjoy the break with the family. Neil and Nicole were keen to do some kayaking and I joined them for a full day trip (9am - 6pm) with a local company.

After getting kitted up, all nice and warm and allocated a kayak, we started the day with some drills and basic skills training. They keep the ratios between customers and instructors tight (we had 2 instructors + 1 guide for the 6 clients) and have extensive experience on this and other local waterways.

One of the first steps is to learn to 'chill' and cool down during the 'inverted' attitude. After a few goes, you start to relax (the whole point of the drill) and then rescue techniques can be looked at. This is good as it reduces the amount of time swimming in the river, rather than kayaking on it!
Some various photos from the day - just something rather than plane photos!
The scenery isn't bad either, oh and the weather - 26+ degrees C and very sunny - we really couldn't ask for more.
This was the stop for lunch - a simple feast with hot tea & coffee.
Then a little snooze in the sunshine before heading back off.
I struggled a bit with cramp, starting with my legs and then my arms and hands - very annoying for me personally, but no problems for Ben / Harriet - always around when needed and providing encouragement and advice.
Cheesy photo of Neil and Nicole - they both enjoyed the trip too.
Silly photo of what I seemed to spend chunks of the day enjoying! At least it was warm above in the sunshine and fresh water which makes the drinking easier! - I don't mind the getting wet, it was my lack of fitness that frustrated me, lots of muscles ached the next day!
The gang photo - a great day out - thanks guys!

In summary: a good company with passionate, experienced, professional guides providing an excellent day out - I would recommend if you feel like doing something a bit different in this neck of the woods. Website: http://www.alpinekayaks.co.nz.
